The state Department of Corrections has selected the University of Massachusetts Medical School to provide health services in prisons.
Officials said the department is entering into negotiations with the school for an initial four-year contract starting in January.
The school participated in a competitive bidding process. Its bid came in about $13 million lower than those offered by other bidders, according to department officials.
The school's bid was also chosen for its increased scope of services to inmates, officials said.
