Officials Look Into Possible Food Poisoning at Illinois Prison

State and Fulton County officials are investigating whether food poisoning has sickened dozens of people at the Illinois River Correctional Center in Canton.
Sergio Molina, chief of communications for the Illinois Department of Corrections, said complaints started coming in from inmates and employees at the prison late Tuesday. As of Wednesday evening, about 60 inmates and four prison employees had complained of diarrhea, Molina said.
He said there have been no other symptoms reported.
'We've been trying to come up with a common denominator,' Molina said Wednesday. 'It could be related to, probably, the lunch meal served yesterday.'
All four employees who reported feeling ill were able to continue working through the ends of their shifts, Molina said.
He declined to comment on what was served for lunch Tuesday, but he said the Department of Corrections medical director plans to visit the prison today to investigate, and more information should be available after that.
'There are sample meals that we keep for reasons just like this, to follow up on,' he said.
The Fulton County Health Department is also investigating the incident, Molina said. The agency regularly monitors food quality at the prison.
