Inmates at the Moberly Correctional Center will be tested for tuberculosis after one of them was diagnosed with the disease, the Missouri Department of Corrections said last Wednesday.
The inmate who was diagnosed with TB is in respiratory isolation, the Corrections Department said. Testing on other inmates will began last Friday.
Testing also is being made available to prison staff, the Corrections Department said.
The Department of Corrections tests all offenders at admission and annually during the inmates' birth months. Likewise, the Department of Corrections tests all employees at the time of hire and annually during staff's birth months. Additional testing such as described above occurs whenever contact with a confirmed case of TB is established.
Moberly Correctional Center Superintendent Tony Gammon said it will take 48 to 72 hours to receive the results of the testing back.
Gammon said the inmate who tested positive for TB had been a resident at the facility for quite a while. He has been in respiratory isolation since November, however.
He added that the prison is following procedure in handling the situation but the severity of the matter cannot be judged till the test results are in.
