Condemned man picks a black olive for his last meal

As the courts wrangled over Robert Buell's fate, Lucasville officials gave the condemned prisoner his last meal yesterday - a single black olive, pit and all - that he quickly gulped down in the death house. Why he selected an 'unpitted black olive' for his last meal is a mystery. At about the same time that Buell swallowed the mystery olive, the Ohio Supreme Court brought a little more certainty to his case by rejecting a lower court's unusual request to delay his execution. Buell, 62, convicted of the 1982 murder of 11-year-old Krista Lea Harrison of Wayne County, was set to die by injection at 10 a.m. today. In keeping with Ohio tradition, a condemned prisoner gets to choose anything he wants for a final meal. To honor Buell's request, prison officials had to hus- tle off to a local market, where they hunted through the aisles and fi nally found a $2.29 can of olives contain ing pits. They served him the single olive in a cup around 4:06 p.m. Officials at the Southern Ohio Correc tional Facility said they were baffled by Buell's request. Prison spokesman Andrea Dean said he would not tell them why he wanted to swallow an olive pit. Dean said officials tried to determine through prison system chaplains if eating an olive with a pit had any overt religious symbolism. 'But we couldn't find anything. . . . We just don't know what it meant.'
