Hi-tech Jails to Ease Crowding in Australia

The walls will have ears and eyes at two new Victorian jails to be built at Deer Park and Lara by 2005. Hi-tech security will make the prisons among the world's most secure and drug free. Corrections Minister Andre Haermeyer said the new $140 million jails would house 900 inmates and ease chronic overcrowding in police cells. Mr Haermeyer said yesterday a 600-bed maximum security remand centre would be built on a 36ha site behind the existing women's prison at Deer Park, about 20km west of Melbourne. A 300-bed medium security jail will be built next to the Barwon Prison at Lara. 'We would expect them to be the most secure and hi-tech prisons in the world,' Mr Haermeyer said. 'We will be asking the companies to put proposals to us that embrace the latest technology, and that may involve retina scanning, face recognition or motion detectors . . . but we would have to be convinced of their reliability first.' Security measures that would be considered include: SENSITIVE sound and motion sensors that trip alarms if inmates or intruders go near. BIOMETRIC scanners to identify visitors. RETINA and face scanners to give only approved staff access to certain prison areas. Mr Haermeyer said the jails would serve Victoria's needs until at least 2011 and provide 500 full-time jobs and 300 jobs during construction. He said the prisons would be run by the state but built and maintained by a private company under a 20-year contract.
