A prisoner who went berserk because he didn't like the choice of music in a prison transport van was sentenced to an additional year in prison. David E. Bowers, 22, of Milwaukee was convicted on a charge of battery to an officer for the incident on Aug. 30, 2001, in a prison transport van on U.S. 41. Outagamie County Circuit Judge Joseph Troy also tacked on five years of extended supervision at Bowers' sentencing hearing. According to the criminal complaint, Bowers was being returned from a Milwaukee court appearance to the Green Bay Correctional Facility, where he is serving a sentence on drug charges, when he objected to the music on the prison van radio and asked that it be changed to an oldies station. When his request went unheeded, he became increasingly belligerent and started tearing up the van, pulling out speakers and wires. Bowers then kicked the door open on the inner cage and gained access to the van's door. The deputy stopped the van to get control of Bowers, who kicked him and spit in his face before he could be subdued, the complaint said. |
