Police were still searching Monday for an escaped inmate hit a correctional officer with a car before leading police on a chase that reached speeds of more than 100 miles an hour. Ricky Thompson, 23, who had been serving a sentence outside of jail on furlough until he went missing, was last seen Thursday night in Newport when an off-duty correctional officer spotted him in the parking lot of a convenience store. When the officer approached, Thompson sped off, hitting the officer with the mirror of the car, breaking the mirror and bruising the arm of the officer, Newport police said. Thompson then led police on a 25-mile chase from Newport to Craftsbury, said Newport City Police Officer Michael Glodgett. Police lost sight of Thompson in Craftsbury; he had been traveling at speeds over 100 mph. The chase was called off because of the danger it posed to other drivers, said Glodgett. Thompson, 23, is 5-foot, 6-inches, and weighs 170 pounds. He has blue eyes and brown hair and was last seen driving a red Chevrolet Blazer with Vermont plates, CNW935. Anyone with information should contact the Newport City Police Department at 334-6733. Thompson is facing charges of attempting to elude a police officer, aggravated assault, and careless and negligent operation of a motor vehicle. |
