Three teenagers, including one accused of assaulting FBI agents during a foiled train robbery, attacked two officers and escaped from a jail, officials said. The youths attacked the officers at the Luna County Detention Center early Monday and drove away with pepper spray and a hand-held police scanner, officials said. All the teens are from Mexico, and authorities believe they fled there. The inmates apparently tore apart a cot and used the aluminum poles from the bed to beat the officers, Luna County Manager Scott Vinson said. 'They put up a good fight, but they were overpowered,' he said. The officers were treated at a hospital; one suffered a broken arm. Vinson said the inmates took the keys to an officer's pickup truck. One inmate, Rogelio Ramirez-Rodriguez, 17, is charged with assault on a federal officer, Jail Director Ed Gilmore said. The others, Cesar Ibarra-Treviso, 17, and Daniel Barnum-Garcia, 16, are charged with smuggling of undocumented immigrants. Ibarra-Treviso also is charged with smuggling marijuana. Ramirez-Rodriguez is among several suspects accused in the Sept. 12 beatings of two FBI agents investigating thefts from railroad cars. |
