Five Federal Inmates Escape From Texas Jail

Authorities searching for five federal inmates who escaped from the Bee County Jail in South Texas are concentrating on areas the fugitives have been found in the past -- the Houston area and the Lower Rio Grande Valley.
The five escaped sometime between 11:30 p.m. Tuesday and 1:30 a.m. today when they managed to get through an air duct and onto the roof of the jail in Beeville.
Sgt. Rick Webb of the Bee County Sheriff's Department said the men then tied bed sheets or mattress covers together and used the makeshift rope to lower themselves to the ground.
Sheriff Bob Horn said the escapees were jailed on charges of illegal entry, The Victoria Advocate reported for its Thursday editions.
'They are dangerous for their past criminal history -- several of them that have had convictions for escape and aggravated robbery -- and they are all dangerous because they were acting as one in trying to escape,' Gene Diaz said, public information officer for the U.S. Marshal's Service in the Valley, said in a story in Thursday's editions of The Brownsville Herald.
The Matamoros natives, Carlos Fernandez-Gonzalez, 45, and Feliciano Encinia-Moreno, who turns 38 Thursday, have both escaped custody in the past and Fernandez-Gonzalez has a history of aggravated robbery dating to 1979. He was paroled from a 25-year sentence for state charges in 1995. Both were arrested in Brownsville earlier this year.
Another escapee, 35-year-old Jose Reta-Martinez, also known as Juan Rosales, also has a history of armed robbery and was charged with a burglary in Brownsville in 1995. He was arrested in Harlingen in July.
Twenty-six-year-old Manuel Reyes-Cortez and 35-year-old Noe Del Valle-Mejia, have a history of less serious offenses, mostly driving under the influence. Reyes Cortez was arrested Sept. 5 in Goliad, Texas, while Valle-Mejia was arrested May 20 in Brownsville.
