The state of Missouri recovered a record amount of money from Missouri inmates in 2003, to reimburse the state for the cost of their housing and care while in prison. Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon last Friday said the state collected $458,047 in 2003, which is $143,000 more than recovered the year prior. The 1988 Missouri Incarceration Reimbursement Act entitles the state to recover up to 90 percent of an inmate's assets after any obligations to spouse or children are met. Since taking office in 1993, Nixon has collected more than $2.4 million from inmates. The average cost of incarceration in Missouri is approximately $13,000 per year. Nixon said the state has recovered money for the state from stock holdings, insurance policies, lottery winnings and recording royalties. |
