Kentucky Death Row Inmate Dies in Hospital

Kentucky death row inmate Eugene Frank Tamme, who was twice convicted of killing two men in a Washington County marijuana field in 1983, died September 27 at an Oldham County hospital.
Tamme, 54, had been moved from the Kentucky State Penitentiary in Eddyville to the Kentucky State Reformatory near La Grange as a medical patient on Aug. 26, said Lisa Carnahan, spokeswoman for the Department of Corrections. She said he died at Baptist Hospital Northeast.
''He had been ill for a long time,'' Carnahan said.
Carnahan said early reports indicate Tamme died of complications from liver disease.
Two juries had found Tamme guilty of shooting Neil Maddox and Harold Sutherland. Tamme was a state employment counselor who also grew marijuana. The victims had worked for him.
Tamme was convicted in 1985, but the state Supreme Court ordered a new trial in 1988 because of errors at the first trial. He was convicted again in 1994.
Fayette Circuit Judge Mary C. Noble ruled in August 2000 that Tamme's second conviction should be overturned, in part because of new evidence that defense lawyers said cast doubt on Tamme's guilt.
In March of this year, the state Supreme Court reinstated the murder convictions and death sentence.
