Folsom officials reported separate sewage spills last week, including a 2,000-gallon overflow in the city's historic district and a 10,000-gallon spill from a state prison that forced the evacuation of Lake Natoma. The 2,000-gallon spill in Folsom occurred when a temporary pipe -- which was being used by a contractor to divert sewer water from one manhole to another -- ruptured while a flow meter was being installed, the city reported. The sewage reached a detention pond and did not contaminate the American River, according to officials. Officials at California State Prison, Sacramento, said they believed a spill of raw sewage from the facility didn't reach Lake Natoma. Billy Mayfield, a prison spokesman, said the prison is required to report spills to the Governor's Office of Emergency Services. While prison officials do not believe Lake Natoma was contaminated, Mayfield said they wanted to err on the side of caution for public safety. OES had reported the spill occurred at California State Prison, Sacramento, in Represa when an inmate flushed a plastic bag down a toilet, causing blockage in the sewage line. The prison's sewage system is separate from the city of Folsom's, said Ken Payne, a city consultant on sewage issues. As such, the prison is listed as the responsible party on the OES report. Sacramento County health department officials will take a water sample this morning, but results won't be back for a few days, said Robert Berger, supervisor for the Environmental Health Division of Sacramento County's Environmental Management Department. The spill originated in one of the prison's small 'mini-yards', Mayfield said. When prison authorities responded to the incident, they discovered there was sewage pumping out of one of the main toilets into the mini-yard's storm drains, which feed containment ponds. Mayfield said the prison's hazardous materials official was investigating the incident to determine exactly what had happened and the extent of the damage. |
