An Arizona Department of Corrections inmate who escaped from an outside work crew earlier this year is back in custody. Investigators apprehended Chester Wilson, 42, in Phoenix late Monday afternoon without incident. On May 14, 2002, Wilson was part of an Arizona State Prison Complex-Yuma inmate work crew cleaning up litter on Interstate 8 when he jumped into a white vehicle driven by an accomplice. Wilson and his accomplice drove off heading east. The investigation determined they spent the night in Yuma and traveled to Phoenix the next day. Over the past several weeks, Department investigators have been tracing Wilson to various hotels and apartments in the Phoenix area, further developing information from numerous sources that Wilson was a key figure in an identity theft ring. At least thirty offenses may have been committed by Wilson and his accomplices involving identity theft, fraud, and theft. Investigation of additional crimes is currently being coordinated with local law enforcement agencies including potential charges against the individual who assisted Wilson in his escape. Wilson will be charged in Yuma County with escape. The Department of Corrections routinely seeks prosecution for escape and upon conviction, additional time added to the inmate's current sentence. Wilson already was serving a six year sentence for fraudulent schemes and forgery. |
