A jury ruled in favor of the defendants, officers in the Rock Island County correctional system.
The lawsuit was filed by the family of inmate Lance Shawn Leslie who committed suicide while in the custody of Rock Island County authorities. The suit claimed that Leslie's death could have been prevented had be been 'properly supervised'.
Originally, R.I. County Sheriff Mike Grchan and four jailers were named in the suit.
'The evidence was quite clear,' said defense attorney Peter Lousberg. 'Mistakes were made but they were innocent mistakes in my judgment and in the judgement of the jury. The conduct of these officers did not go beyond negligence.'
'The correctional officers got what they deserve,' said Sheriff Mike Grchan, 'an acquittal. There were never guilty of anything expect trying to do their jobs.'
Sherrif Grchan says there have been many changes since Leslie's suicide. A new facility has been built and the jail staff has nearly doubled, from 36 jailers in 1998 to 64 today.
