A Milwaukee man serving a 60-year term for burglary, kidnapping and sexual assault escaped from the maximum-security Waupun Correctional Institution in Dodge County on Friday, possibly in the back of a Coca-Cola truck, prison authorities said. Officers from five agencies fanned out across two counties after 28-year-old Thomas E. Deering was reported missing from the prison around 12:50 p.m., according to the Dodge County Sheriff's Department. 'We had an intense search initially, but we've scaled that back,' Chief Deputy Blaine Lauersdorf said. 'At this point, we don't know where he is.' Dodge County officials have issued a bulletin asking authorities to be on the lookout for Deering. He is described as 6 feet tall and 185 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes. He was last seen wearing his prison uniform, but may have had other clothes with him, they said. Deering's escape is believed to be the first at Waupun in 22 years and the first from a Wisconsin maximum-security prison since Lawrencia Bembenek skipped out of Taycheedah Correctional Institution in 1990, according to Waupun and Department of Corrections officials. Bill Clausius, a spokesman for the state prison system, said authorities were still trying to piece together how Deering could have left Waupun undetected. 'Our best guess is that he somehow got on the Coca-Cola truck and left,' he said. A model prisoner since his arrival in April 2001, Deering was working in the prison canteen Friday when the soft-drink truck arrived to make a delivery, Clausius said. Once the delivery was finished, Clausius said, the truck drove off, but not before undergoing at least two searches while still on the prison grounds. Authorities are pursuing whether Deering had inside help - possibly during the searches. However, the Coke driver is not a suspect, Clausius said. |
