Wisconsin Inmate Died From Overdose of Tylenol

An imprisoned teen killer from Wisconsin who had no chance for parole died over the weekend from an overdose of the painkiller Tylenol, authorities said Tuesday.
Investigators have not ruled whether 17-year-old Gregory Gueths' death early Sunday at a Madison hospital was accidental or suicide, said Columbia County Coroner Marc Playman. Gueths was sentenced to life in prison with no chance for parole in July for the stabbing death of Emily Fitzgerald on June 17, 2001.
'There's more to investigate. We have to talk with his cellmates and corrections officials,' Playman said.
Foul play has been ruled out. There was no sign of trauma. The cause of death was acetaminophen overdose, which caused massive liver damage and fluid buildup in the lungs, he said.
Gueths likely swallowed more than 50 acetaminophen tablets of 325 mg each, he said.
'It appears to be a single incident,' Playman said.
Acetaminophen, sold under Tylenol and other brand names, is one of the more potentially dangerous nonprescription analgesic drugs, pharmacologists say.
Bill Clausius, spokesman for the Department of Corrections, said he could not comment Tuesday on how Gueths obtained the tablets. Clausius said the death remains under investigation. Gueths had been at Columbia Correctional Institution in Portage since July 24. He reportedly became ill early Friday, complaining of abdominal pain, and was later hospitalized.
