A federal inmate working on farmland that grows fruits and vegetables for nearby Lompoc prison was carried away by ocean current while trying to save another inmate October 2, authorities said. A search for the prisoner, whose name was withheld, began about 10 a.m. said Air Force Master Sgt. Lloyd Conley. Water temperature hovered between 55 and 65 degrees. The minimum-security inmate was part of a work crew on irrigation duty, said prison spokesman Joe Henderson. 'He was not a threat to the community,' Henderson said. The prisoner entered the water at Jacks Beach, along with two fellow inmates, to save a fourth convict who was caught in the current, Henderson said. It wasn't immediately clear why the first man, who was taking a rest break, entered the water. Henderson declined to say why the man was unsupervised at the time, although he said the prison is only required to check on the status of minimum-security inmates every two hours. Members of the 30th Security Forces Squadron, 30th Civil Engineer Squadron emergency service team, the 76th Helicopter unit, and the U.S. Coast Guard aided in the search. |
