An inmate working in the kitchen at the Limon Correctional Facility used some sort of kitchen utensil to kill a Department of Corrections employee Friday morning, KMGH reported. The attack happened at about 9:30 a.m. in the prison kitchen while the crew was preparing lunch. The victim, 22-year-old Eric Autobee of Pueblo, was the food supervisor. After he was struck in the head, Autobee fell to the floor. He was airlifted to Swedish Medical Center where he was pronounced dead just after noon. He died of blunt force trauma to the back of the head, hospital officials said. It was a random act of violence, said DOC spokeswoman Allison Morgan. The suspect, Edward Montour, was serving life in prison without the possibility of parole for a 1997 murder in El Paso County. He was also given 48 additional years in prison for 'wrongs against children.' According to KMGH, Montour had been what some consider a 'model prisoner' until the attack. He was report-free and was even eligible for a single-cell bunk. Montour was taken to the maximum segregation prison in Canon City. The Limon facility was in lockdown all weekend to help the investigation. All programs and inmate visiting are cancelled. Autobee had been working at the Limon prison since February 2001. This is the first death of a DOC staff member since 1929 and the 14th in DOC history. Joe Ortiz, Executive Director for the DOC said, 'We have a well-trained and professional staff who recognize the daily risk in their work. This is a day that each of us hopes would never occur; our staff is in mourning for the loss of this bright, young man. Right now, my thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Autobee's family. There will be a full investigation.' The State Inspector General and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation are looking into the attack. |
