A Johnson County, Ind., jail officer who was handling guns at a home with three friends was shot and killed in an apparent accident, police said. Jed Fulmer apparently believed a handgun that discharged into his abdomen Sunday had been unloaded, although it had one shell, police Capt. Joseph Gruss said. Another person in the room had asked Fulmer if the .40-caliber gun was loaded, and he said no, Gruss said. The gun went off as Fulmer placed the barrel so that it was facing him, possibly to demonstrate a tactical maneuver, Gruss said. Fulmer, 21, was pronounced dead at a hospital. He had hoped to become a sheriff's deputy. Findings from an autopsy performed Monday supported the theory that the shooting was accidental, Gruss said. The gun was Fulmer's personal weapon, not his service weapon. |
