Denver authorities have arrested a man who apparently escaped from the Denver County Jail last week by sliding down a trash chute and climbing two fences. On October 24, deputies tracked Estuardo Varco to Room 129 at Branding Iron Motel in the 8600 block of East Colfax Avenue. Officials said Varco ran, but deputies used a stun gun on him before he got too far. Deputies called in the Denver police helicopter to provide backup in case Varco got away, said C.L. Harmer, spokeswoman for the Denver Manager of Safety's Office. 'We're glad we got him back,' Denver Undersheriff Fred Oliva said. 'He's in city jail right now being ready to be transported back out to the county jail.' Varco, who was serving an 18-month sentence for misdemeanor crimes and was scheduled to be released in November, escaped from the jail October 21 while he was working in the kitchen. Investigators said they believe Varco - 5 feet, 5 inches tall and 120 pounds - shimmied down a 2 1/2-square-foot trash chute, then climbed two fences. Oliva said deputies started checking with Varco's friends and family, canvassing his old neighborhoods and following up on tips. Oliva said an internal investigation into exactly how Varco escaped should be completed within the next week. |
