U.S. executions decline in 2003

There were 65 executions in in the United States in 2003, down from 71 in 2002, according to the Washington-based Death Penalty Information Center.
The number of inmates on death rows across the nation also decreased from 3,697 in 2002 to 3,504 in 2003.
California as usual led the states in the number of inmates on death row, 632 as of Oct. 1, followed by Texas with 451 and Florida with 381. However, Texas as usual led the nation in the number of executions carried out, 24, followed by Oklahoma, 14, and North Carolina, 7.
Nearly nine out of 10 executions in 2003 were carried out in the South. No one was executed in the West or Northeast.
The number of executions in the United States has varied widely over the last century. Death penalties peaked in the 1930s with nearly 200 nationwide.
