Religious Freedom In Prison An Issue
By Associated Press

A federal appeals court is being asked to reconsider its ruling on a law intended to guarantee religious freedom for prisoners.
Religious and civil liberties organizations say the Sixth US Circuit Court of Appeals was wrong last month when it struck down a federal law which applies to religious freedom in prisons.
The groups are challenging the Cincinnati-based court's ruling that the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act violates the Constitution by advancing religion.
The court hasn't ruled on the request that it re-consider the case.
The Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act generally prohibits governments from limiting the religious freedom of people in prisons and other institutions that receive federal funds.
The appeals court ruled in favor of Ohio prison officials who argued that inmates were using the law as a guise for gang meetings, posing a security threat in state prisons.
