A DeKalb County judge on Friday found the county in contempt of court for blocking outside monitoring of medical care for inmates at the county jail. Superior Court Judge Hilton Fuller ordered the seven county commissioners, Sheriff Thomas Brown and Chief Executive Officer Vernon Jones to make sure medical conditions at the jail are improved by April 2003. The Southern Center for Human Rights, representing inmates denied adequate medical care, had urged Fuller to send the county leaders to jail. Instead, Fuller ordered them to: *provide inmate medical records to Southern Center for Human Rights attorneys within 72 hours of their request. *continue allowing plaintiffs' attorneys unrestricted access to the jail. *pay for monthly visits by Dr. Robert Greifinger, a New York physician and medical consultant appointed by the court to monitor conditions at the jail, until at least April 2003. *compile monthly reports of Greifinger's findings, including the number of inmates who died in custody and how sick patients are treated. |
