Prison Uprising in Malawi Leaves One Inmate Dead, Several Injured

Tension still simmered recently at Malawi's largest prison following a violent uprising that left one prisoner dead and several other inmates and officers severely injured.
The uprising at Zomba Central Prison in the east of the country, began during a power blackout October 26, Chief Commissioner of Prisons, Winston Manyela said.
'What followed was several hours of chaos with the prisoners attacking prison officers with all sorts of (objects), including broken pieces of furniture,' Manyela said.
The prisoners were protesting what they described as a monotonous, poor diet of cornmeal mush and peas.
Manyela said the prisoners overpowered the officers and took control of the prison until extra police security was called.
According to Manyela, the officers and police fired several warning shots before firing on the rioting prisoners.
A 32-year-old inmate, serving eight years for burglary, died instantly after being hit in the neck. Another inmate was shot but survived, officials said.
Manyela said an inmate leader was working with the officers to quell the situation, but was stabbed several times in the head by fellow inmates. He is currently in serious condition. At least 73 prison gates were either destroyed or damaged in the uprising, making the prison no longer secure.
Officials are currently looking for a secure place to house the almost 2,000 prisoners.
Prison officials said the prisoners have been protesting the death of their fellow inmate and they have called for extra security to help ease tensions.
