Police captured a wanted fugitive October 31, less than 24 hours after he and another inmate escaped from Amarillo City Jail. Christopher Lee Boyd, 19, was arrested by Amarillo police about 2:45 p.m. at a hotel, according to an Amarillo Police Department news release. Boyd, who was found with a female acquaintance, tried to escape through a back window in the motel room, but officers were waiting for him, the release said. Police took Boyd into custody without incident and returned him to the city jail. The woman was arrested on an unrelated charge, the release said. Boyd and Valentine Carrol Bryant, 26, escaped from the jail at about 6:20 p.m. on October 30. Police caught Bryant at a downtown residence about 40 minutes after the escape. A hallway door was left open because of painting being done in the jail, Sgt. Randy TenBrink said, and the men escaped through an unlocked window at the end of a hallway. The reason the window was unlocked is under investigation, TenBrink said. 'Evidently, from their cell, they could see that window was not locked,' TenBrink said. 'So probably, they took advantage of an open door and knew that window wasn't locked. So, that's how they left.' The escape was quickly discovered because it is standard procedure to do a head count after inmates finish eating, TenBrink said. Both men were in jail for Class C misdemeanors, but Potter County had previously issued a felony warrant for Boyd in connection with an assault on a public servant. |
