The state began putting felons in a privately owned prison yesterday to help reduce inmate crowding at county jails across Tennessee. It is the first time the state Department of Correction has housed inmates at a privately owned prison. By May, the Whiteville Correctional Facility in Hardeman County will have 1,536 state inmates. The prison is owned by Nashville-based Corrections Corporation of America. Fred Hix, an assistant commissioner of correction, said state prisons do not have room for about 2,600 inmates who are in county jails in Tennessee. The state will pay CCA $42.50 a day for each inmate at the Whiteville prison. |
