Bexar County Sheriff officials said they foiled an alleged plot that involved the killing of detention officers during a jail escape. Deputy Chief Amadeo Ortiz said the alleged escape plan involved three inmates, including Manuel Garza, who was recently convicted of murdering San Antonio Police Officer Anthony 'Rocky' Riojas. Ortiz said the alleged plot involved Garza and the two inmates electrocuting one detention officer and using a TV antenna to murder another officer. But an inmate not involved in the plan allegedly intercepted the secret codes being used by Garza and his alleged accomplices to communicate and turned the notes over to authorities along with a key to break the coded messages, Ortiz said. In one of the notes, Garza allegedly wrote: 'Hit the officer in the neck with both antennas until he don't move. No mercy ... throw water on him to do it faster. We will bust the ceiling panel and get into the roof and get to the roof. In another note, Garza allegedly wrote that the escape would 'go down in S.A. history.' Ortiz said a search of Garza's cell unveiled similar escape plans and a broken TV antenna. 'They never would have been able to carry it out,' Ortiz said. 'Of course (they) deny everything.' Ortiz said the TV in Garza's jail cell was removed and the electricity in Garza's cell has been turned off. |
