Man Says He Was Fired From Mass. Job for Probing N.H. Prison

A private investigator claims he was fired from a prison job in Massachusetts because he testified in a legislative investigation of the New Hampshire Corrections Department.
Robert Miller was fired in August as a unit manager at North Central Correctional Institution in Gardner, Mass., after four months of paid suspension.
Miller said he was fired because he talked to a New Hampshire prison inmate about charges against the New Hampshire Corrections Department being investigated by the legislative committee.
He claims the New Hampshire department retaliated by influencing Massachusetts authorities.
''They saw me more and more a pain in the neck, and they decided we're going to get at this guy any way they can,'' he said.
Massachusetts and New Hampshire corrections officials declined to comment on the case, citing personnel policy.
However, Justin Latini, a Massachusetts corrections spokesman, said any firing would be based on Massachusetts rules, not on actions in another state.
Under Massachusetts rules, a corrections employee can not contact an inmate without getting permission. New Hampshire has a similar rule.
Miller, a former New Hampshire corrections officer, acknowledged he broke the rule, but assumed the rule applied only to inmates within the state.
Latini and New Hampshire corrections spokesman Jeff Lyons said the rules apply to inmates in any state.
Meanwhile, several New Hampshire legislators have written Massachusetts Gov. Jane Swift and Massachusetts corrections commissioner Michael Maloney on Miller's behalf.
