A dump truck rear-ended a prison van carrying 11 inmates Monday morning on the east side of Madison, Wisconsin. Dane County officials said there weren't any escape attempts. The inmates' crimes included manslaughter, armed robbery and sexual assault. They were in Madison for various reasons, including court appearances and doctor's appointments, News 3 in Madison reported. Nine are inmates in the state corrections system, and two are Milwaukee County inmates. The van was on its way to Oakhill Correctional Facility when the accident happened. Madison police said the bus was also carrying two deputies. They were treated and released from Meriter Hospital in Madison. None of the inmates appear to have life-threatening injuries, officials said. Traffic was seriously backed up while emergency workers loaded the injured into ambulances. It took a long time because security protocol mandated that each inmate be accompanied by a law enforcement official in a separate ambulance. Several municipalities had to assist, News 3 in Madison reported. 'This is highly unusual,' said Assistant Madison Fire Chief Arthur Dinkens. 'We had to treat people who are handcuffed or confined in various ways, and then ... deal with other people coming with us in the rescues or following us, following behind us in their vehicles. That's highly unusual.' |
