A County Jail inmate charged with making a home-made rope and trying to strangle a female jailer with it, came to court November 1 with two more of the ropes. Dexter Harris also had a cup, a fork, a spoon and narcotics on him, it was discovered after General Sessions Court Judge Bob Moon ordered him searched. Judge Moon recessed court and said he wanted to see Sheriff John Cupp and Jail overseer Jim Hart 'here immediately.' He told Chief Hart, 'I'm incensed at the danger the court personnel, attorneys and witnesses were put in. This is a serious, serious problem.' Chief Hart said some of the items the inmate had were among items issued to prisoners. He was asked how the man could have gotten into court with all the items. Chief Hart said, 'I don't know that, sir.' Judge Moon said, 'There is no one up here who is more sympathetic to the problem of jail overcrowding. But this cannot happen again. Please don't let it.' When the hearing finally got underway, Harris was bound to the Grand Jury on charges of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of assault and DUI. Judge Moon recently said he was deferring some sentences because of severe overcrowding at the County Jail. He said one of his main concerns was the safety of jailers. |
