Pennsylvania Inmates Help Kids in Run-a-thon

The inmates of the State Correctional Institution at Rockview, along with other inmates across Pennsylvania, recently spent their time running to keep at-risk kids off the path to prison.
Inmates participated in the 21st Annual Pennsylvania Prison Runathon, which raised money for Big Brother/Big Sister programs.
The goal of the run-a-thon was to allow organizations 'to work with youth who might otherwise be taking the path to prison,' said Marie Hamilton, the executive director of CentrePeace. 'The goals of the run-a-thon are commendable: to work for safety of our communities and provide better ways to handle our community problems and to encourage our prison inmates when they do something so diligently, many running under less than perfect conditions, running their hearts out to keep a child from choosing a life of crime,' Hamilton said in a press release.
CentrePeace acted as the liaison between the correctional facility and the community, because the runners in this event cannot go into the community to solicit their own contributions.
'We work with the inmate committees in prison to see how we can help,' Hamilton said.
The run-a-thon, with a total of 59 inmates participating, lasted more than eight hours and logged a total of 1,418 miles. The total amount of money raised has not been tallied yet, said Chad Miner, a correctional activity specialist at Rockview.
Some of the inmates began training for the run months in advance, Miner said. Of the 59 participants in the event, 39 of them completed a 26-mile marathon, and some ran more than that.
A few of the older inmates walked one or two miles, Miner said. 'Some may walk, they just try and contribute what they can,' Miner said.
