A transsexual will be granted early release from prison so he can undergo the final surgery to become a woman. A Roanoke judge ruled Friday that Michelona Sierra De'Lonta, 27, can be released from the city jail one month shy of completing his 6-month sentence for forgery if he pays about $1,200 in court costs by Monday afternoon. De'Lonta, formerly Jay McCulley, petitioned the court for early release so he could keep a long-standing appointment to complete his sex change at a Colorado hospital. If he misses the appointment, it could take more than a year to get another one, said his lawyer, Chris Clemens. Clemens said De'Lonta was rewarded for good behavior. 'She is a jail trusty,' a prisoner who works and can move freely about the jail, Clemens told Circuit Judge Jonathan Apgar. De'Lonta must remain on supervised probation for two years following his release, Apgar ruled. |
