Inmates had to be evacuated from the Carver County Jail after a van fire in the jail's underground garage in Chaska last Friday night. A Sheriff's Emergency Response Team (SERT) van had just been parked inside the garage around 9:15 last night when smoke and flames appeared from under the hood. Eyewitness News reporter Rod Rassman told viewers Saturday the van was a refurbished ambulance. Flames engulfed the van. Firefighters put out the fire, but smoke filled the garage and other areas of the building. Authorities say 96 inmates were evacuated and placed on three parked school buses. They were marched a few at a time, through a gauntlet of police officers lined up between the jail and the buses. All the inmates were taken back to jail by 1:30 this morning. No one was hurt. There's no estimate of losses, but the van was destroyed. |
