A brief disturbance last week at the state prison in Florence. The Department of Corrections says inmates in three cellblocks at the Arizona State Prison Complex Central Unit were involved. DOC says a number of small fires were started, but there were no significant injuries to staffers or inmates. The disturbance occurred in Cellblocks One, Three and Four of the maximum security unit. The three cellblocks house 464 inmates. Shortly after eleven Monday morning, inmates in Cellblock One began setting fires. They torched paper, blankets and clothing. DOC says some of the burning objects were tossed out of the cellblock causing smoke to fill the building. About the same time, officials say inmates in Cellblocks Three and Four began lighting fires and trashing buildings by tossing property out of cells. Staffers responded and immediately put the fires out of Cellblock One. DOC says all inmates are accounted for as well as staffers. The Central Unit is expected to be in lock down indefinitely. |
