| Gunmen Free 29 Inmates From Mexico Jail |

Gunmen dressed in military fatigues burst into a jail in western Mexico on Monday and freed 29 inmates, some of whom were linked to one of Mexico's most violent drug cartels, the police said. "It was very well planned," said Héctor Elías of the Michoacán State Police. "From start to finish, it lasted between five and seven minutes." One person was killed in the breakout, at the Apatzingán prison, about 200 miles west of Mexico City, officials said. The authorities recaptured three of the escaped inmates. Lorena Cortés, a spokeswoman for the state's attorney general, said 40 or 50 heavily armed people arrived at the prison at 3:20 a.m., tied up the officers and released the 29 prisoners. "One convict, called Fernando Coría, died while he was trying to escape," Ms. Cortés added. "Apparently one of the officers shot him from a distance." The jailbreak may have been organized by the powerful drug-trafficking Gulf Cartel, based in Tamaulipas State, on the northern border, and led by Osiel Cárdenas, who was arrested last March, a state official in Michoacán said. Among the fugitives were five suspected gunmen from the Gulf Cartel arrested last November on murder and kidnapping charges. |
