A man who was convicted of stabbing an elderly neighbor to death has been executed by lethal injection in North Carolina.
Desmond Keith Carter was pronounced dead just hours after the U.S. Supreme Court and Governor Mike Easley declined to stop his execution.
The 35-year-old Carter was convicted in 1993 of the murder of 71-year-old Helen Purdy. Authorities say she had refused to give him money to buy drugs. Lawyers have said Carter was intoxicated on alcohol, crack cocaine and tranquilizers when he stabbed Purdy.
In his last statement, Carter apologized to Purdy's family. He also apologized to his own family 'for the disappointment and the pain I have caused them throughout my life.'
Carter is the 23rd criminal executed in North Carolina since the death penalty was reinstated in 1977. He was the second person executed in the state in the last week.
