| Georgia Prison System Fastest Growing in Nation |

Georgia's prison system is one of the fastest growing ones in the nation and although 8,000 beds have been added in four years, the state is considering the need to add at least one more institution within two years. Georgia has the 10th-largest population with about 47,000 inmates but the sixth-largest prison system, said Brian Owens, a Georgia Department of Corrections spokesman. The state's needs might lead to the completion and opening of a private prison in southwest Georgia, about 35 miles south of Columbus, which Georgia officials decided two years ago that it wasn't needed. Nashville, Tenn.-based Corrections Corporation of America said it had invested $35 million and completed about 70 percent of the prison when the company learned the state was no longer interested in using the facility. Construction was halted in June 2000, said CCA spokeswoman Louise Green. Owens said ''very general discussions'' have been held about the possibility of the state using the 1,524-bed medium-security prison in Stewart County. But on Nov. 27, the state Office of Planning and Budget notified CCA that the state planned to review the construction project, because the state Legislature might be asked to provide funds in 2003 to house state inmates there. The prison could provide a tremendous economic boost to a county and region that is one of the poorest in Georgia. It would generate about 350 jobs plus an estimated $1 million in local contracts, Patterson said. |
