A prisoner was returned to jail five days after his escape, after Louisiana police dogs tracked and found him hiding in woods, authorities said. Pike County jail officials noticed that Jonnie Ray Anderson was missing on Dec. 31, during a morning bed check. Two people accused of helping him escape were arrested last week. Robert Harrell, chief investigator at the Pike County Sheriff's Department, said Anderson was captured in rural Pike County about 8:15 p.m. Sunday. 'The dogs basically led us to him. He was lying down on the ground when we captured him,' Harrell said. Anderson was returned to jail Sunday night. Anderson, 51, of McComb, was serving a 65-year robbery, kidnapping and aggravated assault sentence for the Feb. 1, 2002 robbery of a mens-wear store. Authorities said Anderson twisted a rope around an employee's neck until she lost consciousness, then stole jewelry, clothes and $300 cash. Assisting the sheriff's office in the chase were the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, Mississippi Highway Patrol and the police dogs from the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office and the Louisiana State Penitentiary, in Angola, La. An investigation to determine how Anderson escaped is ongoing. |
