A standoff between inmates and officers at a maximum security jail in Scotland on January 2 involved about 50 prisoners, but no staff hostages were taken, the prison service said. Two officers were hurt when they were caught up in fighting at Shotts prison in Lanarkshire, which houses 500 long-term prisoners, the Scottish Prison Service said. Inmates from two sections of two different halls were involved in the standoff with staff, which began just before 8 p.m. (2000GMT). A spokesman said the prison service was unsure what the inmates were protesting about, and that it was not possible to confirm the exact number involved. But he indicated 'about 50' were taking part. Details of the injuries to the officers were not being released, he said. Police, fire crews and ambulances went to the scene and will remain there until the disturbance comes to an end, a spokesman for Strathclyde Police said. |
