Detroit Receiving Hospital is waiting for Wayne County to hand over about $10 million in overdue medical bills for county jail prisoners. John Kelly, Detroit Medical Center's general counsel, says the county doesn't check whether prisoners are covered by private medical insurance or Medicaid before sending them to the hospital. He says revenues from prisoners who have health insurance would help cover the county's costs. A Wayne County Circuit judge recently granted the hospital's request for the county to pay up. The judge is expected to rule on the amount owed and a payment schedule after a Jan. 6 hearing. Officials for Detroit Medical Center, which runs the hospital, say quick payment could avoid or minimize layoffs. The hospital network provides medical care to the city's uninsured and underinsured. It's lost more than $300 million over five years. A spokeswoman for outgoing Wayne County Executive Ed McNamara says she isn't familiar with Kelly's complaint and couldn't comment. |
