An official at Salinas Valley State Prison recently denied a union claim that so-called 'Crip' gang members have increased assaults on officers at the facility just outside Soledad. According to the California Correctional Peace Officers Association, Crips have more frequently attacked since October 2002. The union, which said the assaults occurred throughout the prison, pointed to the following incidents in a flier faxed to The Californian, titled 'Assault Alert': * An inmate throwing hot water through a cell door opening. *A correctional sergeant being punched in the jaw. *An inmate visitor suspected of drug trafficking assaulting prison workers. But a spokesman for the Soledad-based prison, however, said the report is incorrect and no such increase in assaults has occurred. 'Salinas Valley State Prison has not identified a concerted effort by Crip gang members to assault staff at Salinas Valley State Prison,' said Eloy Medina, prison public information officer. 'This assault alert is incorrect.' Mike Garcia, the union's chapter president, did not return a phone call from The Californian. Medina said the prison houses about 3,900 maximum-security inmates, and the possibility of assault is always present. 'We're constantly looking at the way correctional officers do their jobs,' he said. 'And we're always looking for ways to decrease the potential for violence and increase safety.' Medina said all inmate assaults are thoroughly reviewed by staff. 'The primary focus of Salinas Valley State Prison is safety,' he said. |
