Some Wisconsin inmates are learning how to play the stock market thanks to a new program that hopes to teach them how to manage their money when they're released. Fifteen teams of inmates at four state prisons played Economics Wisconsin's Stock Market Simulation last year. It's the game played by more than 2,000 teams of state students in grades four through 12. None of the prison teams did well enough to rank among the top 50 in the state. But inmates say the game has taught them some valuable lessons. Taycheedah inmate Maria Michna says playing the stock market with an imaginary $100,000 taught her how spending and buying affects the economy. John Brueggemann, the director of the state Department of Corrections education office, says the office is considering expanding the game in prisons in the spring semester. |
