Escaped killer Ervin Brown landed in a Montana jail Tuesday after going on a crime spree that spanned at least three states, police said. The 41-year-old Lansing man was serving a life sentence at Mound Correctional Facility in Detroit for the 1989 fatal shooting of Martin Rodriguez, 23, during a robbery attempt. He escaped Friday while on trash detail in a maintenance building. Brown escaped by going through a crawl space and into another building, then climbing over a prison fence and squeezing through the razor tape on top of it, officials said. Officials are investigating the escape, Corrections Department spokesman Leo Lalonde said. No employees have been disciplined. Brown was captured Tuesday in Billings, Mont., by deputies from the Yellowstone County Sheriff's Department after they discovered he was driving a car stolen from South Dakota, Lt. Ron Wilson said. Deputies laid spikes on the road to stop Brown. The spikes blew out the vehicle's tires and sent Brown into a ditch. Brown tried to run down a deputy before going into the ditch and aimed a shotgun at officers, Wilson said. Brown then surrendered to deputies. Police found three handguns in the car that he stole from a store in Buffalo, Wyo., they said. He also robbed a convenience store in Dayton, Wyo., earlier that morning, they said. Wilson said prosecutors plan to press assault charges against Brown. |
