A prisoner who overpowered a deputy and took his handgun before being shot by police in downtown Ellsworth was recovering at a Bangor hospital recently. Rodney Williams, 27, was in fair condition at the Eastern Maine Medical Center as he recovered from a gunshot wound. Williams was shot in the abdomen after he crashed a cruiser in Ellsworth and fired at pursuing officers on December 23. Williams surrendered after being wounded, and a state trooper was posted at his hospital room after the episode. The drama began as Williams was being driven back to the Maine Correctional Center in Windham, where he was serving time for burglary and trafficking in cocaine, officials said. The deputy had taken Williams to a court appearance in Belfast and was about 15 miles from Augusta on the return trip when Williams said he was feeling sick, said Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety. David Drever of the Waldo County Sheriff's Department was overpowered after he stopped and let Williams out to vomit. Williams forced another inmate to drive toward Ellsworth. The deputy and the other inmate were later released. Initial police reports said Williams had handcuffed Drever to a tree along a dirt road in Penobscot. Waldo County Sheriff Scott Story told the Bangor Daily News recently that those reports were incorrect and that Drever was simply released. |
