James V. Crosby, Jr. was named the new secretary of the Florida Department of Corrections last week. Crosby, a Florida native, was picked by Governor Jeb Bush to replace secretary Michael Moore, who resigned last month. Crosby, 50, is a University of Florida graduate and lives near Raiford, Florida. He started his corrections career in 1975 as an inmate classification officer. Crosby was warden at Florida State Prison in Starke, Florida before becoming director of institutions in the Northeast Florida region. Governor Bush praised Crosby's handling of the Valdes crisis at FSP when several guards were accused and subsequently acquitted of the death row inmate's death. 'Here's a guy who has come from the ranks and has the respect of the correctional officers,' said Governor Bush. The Department of Corrections is a massive department, with a $1.7 billion annual budget, 26,000 full-time employees and 73,500 inmates. Former secretary Moore came under fire for centralizing operations to such an extent he demoralized and enraged both inmates and employees. Crosby announced the formation of his transition team Monday and appointed C. George Denman as Chairman assisted by Alberto Dominguez. Crosby's appointment must be confirmed by the Florida Senate during the legislative session that begins in March. |
