Two Bergen County juvenile detention officers are accused of assaulting a teenager in their charge and conspiring with their supervisor, a Paterson resident, to cover it up, authorities said. Eddie Harris, Francesco Bello, and Charles Mitchell have been suspended without pay pending the outcome of the case, said Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli. The assault at the Juvenile Detention Center occurred Sept. 16, said Bergen County Police Capt. Kevin Hartnett. The 16-year-old boy asked Harris for something, possibly a drink of water, and Harris ordered him back to his cell, Hartnett said. From there, the conversation became combative, he said. Deciding that the boy was being disobedient, Harris and Bello put him in a choke hold and dragged him about 40 feet to his cell, Hartnett said. The boy was not injured. After the assault, Harris, Bello, and Mitchell, their supervising officer, 'intentionally falsified police reports and misled officers into believing that an assault had not occurred,' Molinelli said. Bergen County Police detectives learned of the assault after interviewing other officers and staff members at the Paramus center, authorities said. Mitchell, 48, of Paterson, turned himself in Tuesday. He was charged with endangering the welfare of a child, false swearing, filing a false police report, obstruction, and official misconduct. |
