Prison officers restored order to a high security prison in London last Wednesday, 12 hours after violent inmates injured three members of staff. The violence involving about six prisoners began Tuesday afternoon at Shotts Prison in Lanarkshire, Scotland, the Scottish Prison Service said. Inmates stabbed three prison officers during the disturbance. The violence occurred at a special unit for inmates who have problems coping with mainstream prison life. Authorities tried through the night to restore calm and brought the incident under control at 5:30 a.m., Strathclyde Police said. Last Thursday, about 50 inmates at the prison refused to return to their cells and two officers were taken to hospital with injuries. A large number of police officers were stationed around the prison, which currently houses 540 prisoners, during negotiations between prison staff and the inmates involved. That standoff ended peacefully the following day. |
