City plans to outfit suicidal inmates in smocks

New York City reportedly plans to outfit inmates who are considered suicide risks in tear-resistant smocks that they cannot use to hang themselves in their cells.

The Board of Correction, which sets guidelines for treatment of prisoners, approved use of the one-piece smocks on Thursday, The New York Times reported.

The Correction Department plans to order 100 of the $218 smocks, which are sleeveless and made of a thick material designed to resist tearing or twisting, the Times said.

The smocks would be accompanied by blankets made of the same material.

In the first half of this year, six inmates have committed suicide, the highest number in a six-month period in a least a decade, the Times said.

Most commonly, prisoners hang themselves with a belt, piece of clothing or sheet.
