Inmates at Southern State Correctional Facility in New Jersey were being relocated Wednesday as Hurricane Isabel approached the east coast. Department of Corrections Commissioner Devon Brown ordered that the prison's approximately 1,600 inmates be moved to other NJDOC facilities until the threat subsides. The potential for damage at the prison caused officials at the Department of Corrections to take a proactive approach to assure the safety of staff and inmates at the facility, which is comprised of trailers. 'For security reasons, we cannot disclose the locations of the other facilities to which they are being moved or when the move will occur,' said Deirdre Fedkenheuer, spokeswoman for the Department of Corrections. All visitations also have been canceled throughout the weekend at Southern State, adjacent Bayside State Prison, South Woods State Prison, in Bridgeton, and Riverfront State Prison in Camden. Prisoners at Bayside, South Woods and Riverfront will not be evacuated. Fedkenheuer said the last time inmates were evacuated was in September 1985. 'I believe that was for Hurricane Gloria,' she said. |
