| Stewart prison to be finished |

Nashville, Tenn.-based Corrections Corporation of America announced Wednesday that it will complete construction of the 1,524-bed Stewart County Detention Center near Lumpkin, Ga. Work was suspended on the private prison in May 2000 after Georgia Department of Corrections officials indicated the state wasn't planning to contract with the private company to house state inmates. 'The anticipated cost to complete the Stewart County facility is approximately $19 million with completion also estimated to occur during the third quarter 2004,' the company stated in a news release. The news could not come at a more critical time for Stewart County, which just learned last week that the Redman Homes Inc. plant in Richland that manufactures mobile homes is closing in 60 days, putting 200 people out of work. Stewart County Commission Chairman John 'Stonie' Patterson said he talked with CCA officials Wednesday and was told that 'several governments' need the bed space. 'The state of Georgia is needing beds,' said State Rep. Gerald Greene, D-Cuthbert. 'It just depends on our financial situation whether we can come to some type of agreement. If the state bought it and tried to finish it, it would be several years. They've got their people and they can go right ahead.' CCA officials have said the company has invested about $35 million in the prison and that it is about 70 percent complete. Initially, company officials thought they had a verbal commitment from the state to contract with CCA to house Georgia inmates there. Gov. Sonny Perdue had proposed to include $40 million in state bond money in his fiscal 2004-05 budget to buy and complete the prison. Later, that was changed, and $500,000 was included in the state budget for the prison project. But after the state budget shortfall, it was unclear whether Perdue was still committed to the project. |
